In response to thousands of parents searching for information reguarding children flying alone. we have researched and hopefully given you as much information as we possible can. Please read the information below to give you a quick outline on children flying alone.

Further down the page we have supplied all the information from the top u.s.a airlines reguarding Unaccompanied Minors. This includes each airlines fees and terms and conditions.

Airline rules vary but this will give you a good idea of what to expect on domestic flights:

Children ages one through four may fly only when accompanied by an adult. A child must be at least five to fly alone.

Kids five through eight can take a direct flight to a single destination but not connecting flights.

Those over eight may change aircraft. If they're eight through eleven, they will be escorted by airline personnel to their connecting flight. A significant extra charge for this service is likely. Older kids ages 12 through 15 may not be routinely escorted, but you can request this assistance.

Anyone under age 17 who is flying alone on an international flight must have a signed note from a parent or responsible adult giving permission, destination and length of stay.

Minors must be met at the destination by another parent or responsible adult.

As these guidelines vary slightly by airline, be sure to contact your carrier for specific information.

Other Considerations

Although many airlines offer discounts for minors under normal circumstances, if your child is flying unaccompanied, it is practically a certainty that you will pay a full adult price for the ticket.

The good news? The fee you pay for an escort covers an unlimited number of children traveling in the same party (except on Alaska Airlines). Hence, if you are sending your three children together, you pay only once.

On international flights, the age restrictions are more stringent. Additional fees may apply if a flight is longer than six hours in duration.

Due to new security measures, it is possible you won't be able to accompany your child to the boarding gate. In such cases, the airline will provide an attendant to escort your child through security and accompany them through the boarding process. Sometimes, however, you may request special admission at check-in and accompany your child into the terminal. Such policies vary by airport, so be sure to check ahead of time if this is a concern.

Tips For Smooth Sailing

Never wait until you have reached the airport to inform the airline that you have a minor traveling unaccompanied. Always provide this information to customer service over the phone, and have them inform you of all your options, all fees involved, and so forth.

If you can help it, buy your children nonstop tickets only. If a change of planes is necessary, use a small, less intimidating airport for the transfer, if possible.

When you send your child, make sure that he/she is traveling with emergency information. For example, leave instructions on how to handle flight delays or cancellations, including emergency contacts and a means to pay for necessities, such as overnight accommodation.

Familiarize your child with the plane ticket and have him/her keep it in a safe place. Upon departure, the child will need to retain the ticket for the return flight or as a receipt. We recommend utilizing e-tickets whenever possible, so the information will be stored in the airline's computers in case of emergency.

Try to book a morning flight. If it is delayed or canceled, you have the rest of the day to make alternate plans.

Small children may have trouble with checked baggage. If it can be avoided, don't send them with excess luggage. If not, when checking luggage, make sure to check the stubs yourself, to be sure that the luggage claim ticket and luggage tag match your child's final destination.

Get to the airport early to ease check-in and get children accustomed to their surroundings. If possible, show them where help desks are located, and get them to recognize uniformed employees.

Give them a picture of the person meeting them -- with the full name, address and phone number written on the back. You will need to provide this information to the airline as well.

Make sure the adult meeting your child at his or her destination is carrying photo identification.

Pack some snacks for the child: juice boxes, chips, sandwiches, trail mix or other finger foods like grapes or berries.

Make or buy young children a travel pack to keep them entertained while in-flight. A great place to try is Travel Tots.

Give your child a little cash to cover incidental expenses and phone calls in the event of an emergency.

In addition to being sure your child knows how to place a collect call, you may want to give him/her a calling card before she travels, as well as a list of numbers to call if necessary.

Just because a five-year-old is permitted to fly solo, does not mean that your child will be able to handle flying alone, especially if it involves a connection and/or a child that hasn't flown before. Parents should use common sense and make a decision based on if they feel the child is mature enough to handle it.

British Airways

Skyflyer Solo involves British Airways taking special care of your child through the airport process - departure, arrival and, of course, in the air. (This service was formerly known as the Unaccompanied Minor Service.)

Our staff will make sure your child has a safe and fun flight. Dedicated children's lounges at Heathrow and Gatwick help get things off to a flying start.

On board, your child can look forward to special children's meals (not available on UK domestic flights), activity packs and on our Intercontinental flights, dedicated radio and TV channels.

For details of on our on-board entertainment, activity packs and children's meals for Skyflyers, please click here.

Our Skyflyer Solo service applies to, and is mandatory for all children travelling alone from five years (on single-sector flights under 4 hours in duration) up to their 12th birthday.
Children over 12 can travel alone or they can take advantage of our Skyflyer Solo service.

(Please note: It is now a requirement that we ask the adult collecting the child at their final destination to show photographic ID before the child is released into their care.)Skyflyer Solo Charges. Effective 1 April 2006, all children travelling alone, from five years up to their 12th birthday, are subject to the normal adult fare tariff, plus a supervision fee, charged in your own local currency, equivalent to $50.00, or approximately £32.00, depending upon exchange rate fluctuations.

This fee is charged per flight sector, e.g. if it is a one way journey on a direct flight from Heathrow to New York the fee will be equivalent to $50.00.
If it is a return journey on the same route, direct flights, the fee will be equivalent to $100.00.

The charge, made at the time of booking, applies to all fares and routes. The decision to introduce a supervision fee was not taken lightly and reflects the high cost of providing a service used last year by nearly 150,000 younger flyers. It also brings the airline into line with other major carriers who already make a charge for similar services.Important Service Notes: If a child is travelling with a companion who is over 12 years old but who has not yet reached their 16th birthday, the child will still be regarded as a Skyflyer Solo and charged the new supervision fee.

British Airways will no longer provide airport staff assistance for older children between 12 years old and their 18th birthday, unless you specifically request and pay for the Skyflyer Solo service at the time of booking.

As has always been our policy, children whose journey involves an onward transfer on the same or to another British Airways flight must be aged at least six years of age. British Airways will no longer be able to accept children travelling unaccompanied on any itineraries which include a transfer between London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports.

Please note: British Airways flights operated by Aer Lingus or America West using a BA flight prefix do not allow children under 12 years old to travel unaccompanied.Customers wishing to use the Skyflyer Solo service should notify British Airways Reservations or their travel agent at least 48 hours prior to travel.Regrettably, we are not able to carry unaccompanied children who have not been notified to us in advance of 48 hours. Flight reservations will always be booked as an e-tickets (electronic ticket) wherever your route allows, in line with British Airways preferred ticketing policy.

All British Airways staff who look after our skyflyers on the ground and in the air have undergone extensive checks including an enhanced criminal record check in compliance with UK Government Legislation. At present it is not possible to make a reservation on ba.com for a child travelling alone using the Skyflyer Solo service, as it is a specialist service - we need to ensure that your child receives all the care and attention you would expect and therefore the information we require at the time of booking is vital. Also, due to cabin restrictions some flights can only accept a certain number of children travelling alone, therefore the number of "Skyflyer Solos" already booked needs to be checked prior to the flights being confirmed. To make a booking, please contact your local British Airways office for this service.

Telephone numbers can be found if you click here. Please note the following with regard to children travelling to/from Portugal. Please be aware that a recent change to Portuguese immigration rules has introduced more stringent requirements for children travelling to or from Portugal. Portugal Nationals and Alien Residents, under 18 years and leaving or re-entering Portugal unaccompanied by their father, mother or legal guardian need a Travel Authorisation. This Travel Authorisation must be signed by both parents (in the event that they are married) or in special cases, by whomever is applicable, i.e. the father, mother or legal guardian. This Travel Authorisation is also required when minors are accompanied by a person other than their father, mother or legal guardian. In such cases the Travel Authorisation must also clearly show the name of the accompanying person. Foreign minors under 18 years and travelling alone may be refused entry if they do not have anyone in Portugal taking responsibility for their stay.

Please note the following with regard to children travelling from Russia. Russian minors, under 18 years, leaving the Russian Federation and travelling alone are required to hold a notarized letter, (Power of Attorney), in the Russian language stating that the minor is permitted to leave the Russian Federation. This also applies to minors, not residing in the Russian Federation, but still holding a Russian passport.

United Airlines

United offers unaccompanied minor service for children from 5-17 years of age.

For the safety of minors traveling alone, unaccompanied minor service will ensure that your child is boarded onto the aircraft, introduced to the flight attendant, chaperoned during connections and turned over to the appropriate person upon arrival at their final destination.

The service is mandatory for unaccompanied minors 5 to 11 years old and
optional for 12- to 17-year-olds. If the child is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, he or she may not travel on the last direct or connecting flight of the day. The fee is $99 USD each way (except to/from Japan). Notify us at 1-800-UNITED-1 (864-8331) when making your reservation so essential information can be noted for your child. Be aware that the responsible adult bringing the child to the airport (including camp counselors, etc.) must remain at the airport until the child boards and the aircraft departs the gate.

The following rules apply to those customers traveling on United-operated flights only. If an unaccompanied minor is scheduled to travel on a flight operated by one of our Star Alliance or code share partners, you are required to contact the carrier directly to inquire about their policies for children traveling unaccompanied.

Children ages 5 through 11 may travel alone on United as unaccompanied minors.

5-7 years
Children ages 5-7 may travel on United flights that are nonstop or do not require a change of airplane. They may not travel on connecting flights. They may also travel on the last non-stop flight of the day.

8-11 years
Children ages 8-11 may travel on United non-stop, direct and connecting flights. (A direct flight makes a stop but there is no plane change.) They may also travel unaccompanied on connecting flights to other airlines. Children ages 8-11 are restricted from connecting to the last flight of the day which includes the last direct flight of the day. An exception can be made for children connecting to and from international flights.

12-17 years (Optional)
Unaccompanied minor service is available, but not required, for this age group. We strongly recommend that teenagers who are not using our unaccompanied minor service be confirmed on flights early in the day. Unanticipated delays or cancellations and unexpected weather such as fog, snow, thunderstorms or air traffic congestion may disrupt flight schedules and result in misconnections. If delays result in travel the following day, United may not be able to offer overnight accommodations since many hotels will not accept minors aged 17 or younger. If unaccompanied minor service is requested, standard fees will apply.

If a child aged 12-17 years is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, he or she will be accepted under the conditions specified for unaccompanied minors aged 8-11 years.

When two or more unaccompanied minors are traveling together, the most restrictive age requirement will apply. For example, an 11-year-old traveling with a 6-year-old may only travel on nonstop flights or flights that do not require a change of airplane.

There are several convenient ways to book your child’s travel:

united.com

United Reservations

Travel agency

Such information includes the names of individuals bringing your children to the airport and picking them up at their destination. Please have names, addresses and phone numbers handy to help expedite the call.

Unaccompanied minors must be brought to the departure airport by a parent or responsible adult (including camp counselors, etc.) who must remain at the airport until the child boards and the aircraft departs the gate. This individual must provide evidence that another parent or responsible adult will meet the child at his or her destination.

Fees
There is a $99.00 fee for unaccompanied minors traveling on United flights worldwide. The fee applies in each direction of travel. Two or more children who are immediate family members traveling together will be assessed one fee each direction.

Safety

All information about unaccompanied children is entered into our reservations computer. This essential information includes the name, address and telephone number of the responsible adult bringing them to the departure airport and picking them up at their destination.

To ensure that children are released to the proper person, the adult meeting unaccompanied children at their destination must show photo identification.

Frequently asked questions

How will you keep track of my child?
A unaccompanied minor form must first be completed. During travel, children are given a bright red-and-white striped button to pin on their clothes. This button easily identifies unaccompanied children to our staff on the ground and in the air.

What precautions does United take to ensure my child's safety?
Our boarding representative will introduce your child to the flight attendant and provide the flight attendant with any information pertinent to your child's flight.

Our flight attendants are instructed to turn any children traveling alone over to a United representative at the destination. These representatives are responsible for seeing that the child is released to the proper person. This person needs to present photo identification.

Advise your child to stay on board the flight until they are taken by a flight attendant to the United representative at the destination.

Will the airline staff be able to contact me?
The unaccompanied minor form accompanies each child traveling alone. You may include your cell phone and pager numbers along with the other required information when confirming your child's reservation.

What happens if the flight is not on schedule?
If we have any indication that your child's flight may not operate as scheduled, we will advise you and suggest you confirm travel for another flight or another day. On occasion, unexpected weather such as fog, snow, thunderstorms or air traffic congestion may disrupt flight schedules. If this happens, we'll attempt to let you know what the situation is and update you during the delay if possible.

What is the checked and carry on baggage allowance for an unaccompanied child?
To learn about the baggage requirements for either a domestic or international flight please view the
baggage section .

Additional tips
Give your children a calling card or teach them how to make collect calls so they can always reach you. Because unexpected weather can disrupt flight schedules, we recommend that you confirm your unaccompanied child on flights early in the day.

A completed Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage Form is required for travel, which will remain with the child throughout his or her flight. The form may be completed at the airport ticket counter on the day of departure. If your child is traveling to an international destination, please refer to Required Documents for International Travel.

Drop off

If you're dropping off or meeting an unaccompanied minor (in domestic U.S. cities only) parents/guardians may get gate access passes at the ticket counter to accompany the child to the departure gate. Parents and guardians should arrive early to check in unaccompanied minors and get a gate access pass.

Pick up

US Airways requires that the person meeting an unaccompanied minor show a government-issued photo ID to ensure your child's safety. Also, in domestic U.S. cities only, the person meeting the unaccompanied minor may also get a gate pass from the airport ticket counter.

If a flight is canceled or misconnects occur while with an unaccompanied minor, US Airways will notify the person meeting your child by calling the phone number provided. US Airways will arrange alternate transportation.

Tips and suggestions

Children

If the child has not flown before, take a trip to the airport. Familiarize the child with the identifiable uniforms of US Airways representatives.

Introduce the child to the representative at the ticket counter and also at the departure gate.

Advise the agent at the departure gate if the child has never flown before, or if the child has any condition which would require special attention during the flight.

Be certain to provide the child with proper identification and cash for emergencies. On some flights meals may be available for purchase.

Provide materials to keep the child occupied and entertained during the flight.

Keep carry-on luggage to a minimum. Remind the child of the bags for which he or she is responsible. Make sure each of the child's bags has an identification tag with his or her name. Report any losses to US Airways personnel immediately.

Remain in the gate area until the child's flight has departed.

Arrive at the gate in advance of the scheduled arrival time.

Remind the child that he or she should only ask for assistance from a uniformed US Airways representative.

Young adults

Upon request, service will be provided by US Airways for young adults ages 15 through 17. The Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage form must be completed, and the unaccompanied minor fee applies.

In the event of a delay or cancellation, US Airways personnel will assist the young adult by making alternate travel arrangements. In the event that flights are unavailable until the following day, we can arrange for overnight accommodations at a hotel.

During the flight your child will receive special attention. He or she will also have a personal escort from the aircraft to the designated pick-up person. At no point will your child be left alone during the drop-off and pick-up points of contact.

We'll only release the child to the designated recipient. Please have that person bring his or her photo identification for verification.

We recognize that the safe transport of your child is your number one concern, and we know the importance of that responsibility. We will provide your child with a safe, comfortable and memorable experience. Please contact Reservations at 800-4321-FLY (800-432-1359) to determine escort restrictions that may be in place due to enhanced airport security measures at your child's city of departure and arrival.
